Olombi Bois Yarur

Olombi Bois (she/her) is currently a programming and research assistant at the Research Center for Material Culture.

Her research interests focus on identity representation by Caribbean, and Caribbean diasporic contemporary artists. Identity here defined as the exploration of being Caribbean and of Caribbean descent. Olombi aims at investigating how through visual explorations of the “ajiaco” of identities in the archipelago, one can uncover not just colonial legacies, but also the anti-colonial strive to breakaway from stereotypes and a singluar affiliation of the Caribbean as a victim of colonialism.

Olombi holds an RMA in Art History from Utrecht University and a BA in Art History from the University of California Los Angeles. Her RMA thesis brought specific focus to the national specifications on museum labels. She questioned if and how contemporary artists’ national identities should be mentioned in the descriptive label associated with their exhibited works in museums. She added complexity Olombi explored this question using Caribbean diasporic artists exhibited in what are today denominated "Western” countries such at the United States and the Netherlands.
