The Stranger Next Door with Jabu Arnell

Activate Project | 3-5 Nov 2016 | Amsterdam

A neighborhood project consisting of an art route with works around the theme of the stranger. Artist Jabu Arnell will create a new work in response to the museum’s collection, which will be on show for three days in the Glutenvrije Winkel (Pretoriusstraat 37) in Amsterdam East. The Stranger Next Door invites artists, neighbors and students to respond to the concept of the stranger within the context of the city.

The Stranger Next Door

Together with artist Jabu Arnell, the Research Center for Material Culture unpacks and traces the notion of the stranger and its historization within the ethnographic collection of the Tropenmuseum. How can an object become a neighbor? How can it speak for itself and express emotions? Arnell's intervention to the collection focuses specifically on a mask from Congo and a wooden figure from Ivory Coast, and proposes a transformation and translation of distance, gaze and consciousness that reflects the current discourse around citizenship and identity in the Netherlands.

The art route is open from Thursday 3 – Saturday 5 November between 17:00 – 23:00.

On Friday November 4, Jabu Arnell will give a talk about his work at the Krugerkamer, Krugerplein 17, Amsterdam
