Copy/paste: Is sampling cultural appropriation? | Black Achievement Month

EVENT | Sunday 13 October | 13:00 - 17:00 | Wereldmuseum, Balzaal & Salon

For this afternoon’s event we will explore questions around copying, remixing and sampling in relationship to the discussion around cultural appropriation. The event will feature diverse creative artists from Rotterdam in discussions and in performances. Together they will examine the sometimes thin line between appropriation as a constitutive domain for creativity, renewal and making things our own, and appropriation’s acknowledged negative side, which is enmeshed in the unequal use and distribution of power.

The program will begin with a keynote lecture by writer, musician and cultural provocateur Greg Tate entitled That Tragic Magic: The Gift of Black Culture In The Age of Hypercapitalist Reproduction’. After this lecture there will be a panel discussion with Winne (Couture 33), Wayne Modest (head of the Research Center for Material Culture), Carista Eendragt (DJ) and Zaïre Krieger (Dipsaus Podcast).

The day will be closed with drinks, informal conversation and dance under the musical guidance of DJ Kesia Smit.

This program is organized in collaboration with Wereldmuseum, Music Matters and the Research Center for Material Culture. Copy/Paste /Remix is part of the Wereldmuseum’s contribution to the national Black Achievement Month celebration in the Netherlands.
